Took me a sec to realize it was a painting, I just thought it was a weird photograph. What are the dots for?

(^^) My Friend, such good work, your an inspiration to me... people tell me give the general idea of your subject... I ignore them, I believe in showing how it is...I might do abstracts... and other things, but I mainly want a realistic look. Your work looks like I can reach out and actually pick the object up... really well done my friend. :)

This is off to yet another very impressive start. Your work is always astounding when the finished product is seen.

I've been starting to venture deeper into realism and am currently using oils. I have worked with acrylics in the past but not since I have become much more comfortable with painting.

What properties of acrylics do you enjoy that help you achieve realism? Do you use a stay-wet palette to keep them from drying out?

hi ringo..

i use the acrylics only because i airbrush a lot.. if i was only brush painting, i definately would be using oils.. i just mix the colours as and when in little pots.. :)

Oh ok, I wasn't sure if you airbrush or not. Thank you for the insight into your process. I can't wait to see the final painting. The scale of details is going to be amazing for the eye to take in.

Hi Tom, Love all your work.

I use a fair bit of airbrush in my work too but I work much smaller than yourself no more then 30"x22". I only work this size because I paint on watercolour board or wash and line board and that is the max size I can get this board. I sometime wish I could paint on a larger scale so it interests that you paint onto panels. So I was wondering what are the properties of these panels and what is the preparation needed on them before airbrushing and masking can start? Thank you for your time James

thanks very much james...

its interesting taking the step to working larger.. quite different and oftne the effect is much different.. watercolour board is something ive never worked on myself. i basically make either a ply or an aluminium panel. i make a framework with cross braces included, much like a stretcher for a canvas.. then i glue that whole item down onto a piece of wood usually ply.. then i seal it and prime it like 12-15 times. before sanding it back smooth using wet and dry sandpaper. and whatla.. i begin.....

cheers
