Tom Martin ''Pop'' 2011 acrylic on aluminium 120cm by 130cm
This painting marks the beginnings of a change in my work. These are ideas which ive wanted to work with for a while, but for one reason or another havnt done.
Essentially im trying to look for ways to create a situation whereby things are believably real, yet impossible. The scenario here is impossible and cannot ever exist in this world at least, but we are forced to accept it. In addition to that, the references ive used for each part of the painting are pieced together in an impossible manner too. For example, the references ive used for the packet, background etc are taken at a different focal length to the ones i used for the nude. I used a 50mm (without any distortion taken out) for the packet etc, and then a 85mm for the figure. Maybe here the gap between the focal lengths is not significant enough for this to become apparent. Its something im going to develop.
While i was thinking about these ideas, i did look back only a short period of time in art history to the work of the late Richard Hamilton. If we look at the iconic work by him '' Just what it is that makes todays homes so different, so appealing?'', he presents us with a situation which is similar. Things have been bashed together and forced, yet in a strange way they look right. looking at that collage by him, my work and what it reminds you of will tell you why I chose the title 'Pop' for this painting.
I agree with the other replies you have gotten on your work. It is INGREDIBLE and so realistic. Your work actually looks like a photography. I am just learning to paint; If I can be half as good as you that would be awesome!
