your work reminds me a bit of james rosenquists's - have you ever heard of him? yours is even more detailed than his though, but its a similar style

With all the clean and chrisp detail, clean lines, amazingly realistic blending and everyhint it's really hard to believe this isn't a photo. Amazing job, especially with the lighting and highlights

you get better and better! I have a request, I want to see you do photorealism/ hyperrealism from imagination using no refs. That would be amazing to see and i bet you would do it brilliantly!

Actually I think the strawberries look quite good actually excellent the word. It's funny because today I am painting a glass plate with grapes a cut orange and some strawberries but on a lot smaller scale. 20x26cm. It's almost done owing me 15 hours so far, maybe another four or five to go. I'll post in in DA and my website if you want to have a look.

I thought your work was excellent, and I was wondering about the aluminium you use - how thick? polished?
Reply
:iconhyper-tom:
hyper-tom Featured By Owner Aug 15, 2009
the aluminium comes pollished. and is 1.5mm thick, but infact i rough it up as much as possible to make the paint have something to form a tooth with..

Awesome painting once again Tom. The reflections on the white surface are brilliant, the shadowy reflections are really awesome. The grains of rice are fantastic. I really like the way you get the metallic surfaces so realistic. I like the reflections on the bolt. The surface that's pointing directly at the viewer. You can make out what I think is you taking the reference photo? I've been trying to work out what's being reflected. Top notch hyperrealism.

I took a trip to the Plus One gallery yesterday to see some of your and Simons work in person yesterday. I'm definitely going to check out your exhibition in Sept. Are you looking to finish another painting for the exhibit?

hi carl..

firstly thanks for the comment.. glad ya like it.. im not sure wht the refelction your seeing is, i think its possibly the dint or inperfections in the metal as the end part isnt all that reflective. but who knows...

ah thats great you made it to plus one. its great to visit there are always some great works on show..am glad your going to come along in sept too.. yes indeed, i am beginning the final piece towards the show yes..

thanks

The reflections I'm talking about are on the tread of the bolt. You can see the end of the white table and all that. It's really well done. :)

How do you paint acrylic on aluminum? Do you use a certain type of primer? I feel like the acrylic wouldn't stick
Reply
:iconhyper-tom:
hyper-tom Featured By Owner Jul 26, 2009
well i feel like that too.. but i sanded the aluminium all over very intensly, do give it a key for paint to grip to.. then i purchased a special primer by lascaux which is ment for non porus surfaces ie, aluminium.. did three coats of that, then went over it with ten coats of my usual gesso primer.. so all being well it willl be ok..

hmm yeah sounds like you really prepared it well- but how thick is the surface now?? i'm just imagining it peeling from the weight or something since the work is so large, but i'm no expert. It'll probably be fine :)

i would not like to say how thick it is.. all layers i apply are thin, even the paint as its applied with airbrush..so i dont think in actual fact its as thick as it sounds.. lets hope it never does!

My new work is on aluminum too.

Brighter looking than some of your other recent paintings, crisp and clean looking piece. Like the integration of weights and overall composition, especially with subtle reflections off the tabletop.

You will have to hand carry this one over to NYC when you come so I can see it up close, just tuck it under your airline seat!!!

the aluminium ws cool.. had to buy a special primer to use before my normal gesso...

yeh the brightness is too much on here, its not like this in reality denis, just normal haha...

i like the comp too, just a shame that the camera does show everything ive spent time painting.. hate photographing work...

yeh al make sure i pack it in my hand luggage hhaa

Impresinve as always.
What caught my eye was the small water pools under the strawberries and the fact that you used aluminium instead of a cavas. It's sound fun and hard to work on it.
Great! :)
